Rumi Rêvé is a contemporary abstract artist whose work explores the tension between inner experience and external reality. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Visualization from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design before moving to Los Angeles, where she worked in television and film production. After leaving Los Angeles, Rêvé spent the following years traveling and living in different parts of the country. Ultimately, a serious autoimmune diagnosis forced a shift in pace and perspective. Painting became a means of realigning herself and exploring the relationship between emotion, the body, and the nervous system.
Rêvé works with mixed media, including charcoal, inks, spray paint, and acrylics, creating paintings with a visceral sensory presence. Her process is deeply intuitive and immersive, moving fluidly between eight or more canvases at once. She develops each surface layer by layer through energetic gestures, drips, highly saturated color, and aggressive mark-making. The resulting works are imposing and emotionally charged.
Rêvé lives and works in Denver, Colorado, where her studio occupies an expansive loft in a converted tire factory. Flooded with natural light from an 18-foot greenhouse roof and overlooking the city and distant Rocky Mountains, the space has become an integral part of her painting practice. Rêvé’s work continues to move toward a deeper exploration of symbolism within abstraction, pushing the tension within her compositions while seeking a greater understanding of the meaning behind the recurring forms and imagery that surface intuitively within the work.
